Helen Gandy was a long-time secretary and personal assistant to FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. She began working for Hoover in 1918 when he was head of the General Intelligence Division of the Justice Department, and continued in that role when he became director of the FBI in 1924.
Gandy was known for her loyalty and discretion, and she became one of Hoover's most trusted and valued employees. She handled much of the day-to-day operations of the FBI, including managing Hoover's schedule, handling correspondence, and keeping meticulous records of his activities.
Gandy was also known for her ability to keep Hoover's personal life private and to maintain the strictest level of confidentiality in all matters relating to the FBI. She remained with Hoover for nearly five decades, until his death in 1972, and she continued to work at the FBI until her own retirement in 1972.
After her retirement, Gandy destroyed many of Hoover's personal and confidential files at his request, in order to protect his legacy and reputation. She died in 1988 at the age of 90. Helen Gandy's role as Hoover's loyal and trusted secretary has been portrayed in various films and television shows about the FBI and J. Edgar Hoover.
